Inferno Lighter Review: The Preferred Lighter for Outdoor Enthusiasts

Inferno Electric Dual Arc Lighter

Flameless lighters are becoming increasingly popular for backcountry camping and survival enthusiasts, and there’s good reason for that. Traditional butane lighters, the long-standing choice of fire starter to have with you in the great outdoors are susceptible to the elements and can be difficult to operate in the wind, rain, and cold. Flameless lighters, also known as electric lighters, are designed and engineered to provide you with a reliable fuel source no matter the conditions.

The electric lighter market is growing and with many options to choose from, how do you know which flameless lighter is best for you? To help you decide, we reviewed the Inferno Electric Dual Arc Lighter. Inferno is a new brand of flameless lighters which markets itself as “the future of fire starting”.

Criteria

Whether you are hiking, skiing, camping, or paddling, it’s always a good idea to bring a lighter with you. While some outdoor pursuits may carry matches or even a flint and steel, a lighter is often preferred for starting fires and with flameless lighters becoming more and more popular, you can expect to see these in many more hiking packs. When choosing a flameless lighter for your personal gear kit there are a few key things to consider.

First and foremost, it is critical that your lighter is reliable. Whether you are lighting the stove to make a cup of coffee or starting a fire in an emergency situation, you want a lighter that you can count on. Flameless lighters are marketed as “weather-proof”, meaning they will continue to operate in the rain, wind, and snow. In addition, the rechargeable battery of flameless lighters can provide between 500 and 1000 charges. Selecting a flameless lighter with a long battery life is critical as opportunities to charge the battery may be limited.

It is quite common for outdoor adventurers to store their lighters in convenient places where they can be quickly located and grabbed. This may be the pocket of a hiking pack, life jacket, or simply a pair of pants. While these locations are all convenient, they do not provide much protection if stepped on or dropped. Therefore, having an electric lighter that is made with durable components is important.

Despite your best efforts, lighters can be easily misplaced while hiking or camping and therefore the cost should be considered as well. A quick search of the electric lighter market will show you that the cost of these lighters range between $20 to $80.

Our Ratings

At first glance, the Inferno Lighter looks like a traditional butane lighter. However, pop open the lid and you will quickly see that this is no ordinary lighter.

When you pick up the lighter one of the first things you notice is how solid it feels in your hand. The smooth casing is made out of aircraft grade aluminum zinc-alloy. This material is light in weight, extremely durable, and very sleek looking. Inside the body of the case is a small rechargeable battery which serves as the energy source - that’s right, butane fuel is not required as the Inferno Lighter uses electricity. To ignite the lighter, simply press the small button which is centrally located on the casing.

Underneath the lid, the traditional butane valve and strike wheel is replaced by four electrical nodes. By pressing the ignition button, energy is drawn from the small rechargeable battery and sends an electrical current through the nodes. Simply place what you need lit in the current. The heat produced by the electric current is comparable to a butane lighter, yet looks much more impressive as the current forms a purple ‘X’ as it passes through the nodes.

The lighter features a fail-safe mechanism preventing unwanted ignition. When you throw the lighter in the pocket of your hiking pack, you won’t have to worry about it igniting as the lid of the lighter must be open for the electrical current to pass through the nodes.

The rechargeable battery can store enough power to provide a minimum of 500 charges. When it’s time to charge the battery simply plug the lighter into a USB charger. The LED indicator light will blink letting you know when it’s fully charged. A full charge will take approximately one hour.

The Inferno Electric Dual Arc Lighter retails for $29.95 (USD) and can be purchased directly through the company website or on Amazon. A USB cord is included.

Pros

  • The most impressive feature of the Inferno Lighter is that it works in all weather conditions. This feature gives this lighter a significant advantage over traditional butane lighters. We have all experienced the struggle of lighting a butane lighter in the wind, rain or cold - the wind or rain blows out the flame or your cold fingers can’t operate the strike wheel. With the Inferno Lighter, a simple click of a button provides you with a reliable heat source no matter the weather.

  • The design of the ignition button makes this lighter very easy to use -  simply press the centrally located button. If you’re winter camping, the lighter can even be easily operated while wearing bulking mitts or gloves.

  • With it’s “weather-proofness” and long lasting battery (minimum of 500 charges), the Inferno Lighter would be a great addition to an emergency survival kit. In situations where you need a reliable heat source, you’ll be very happy to have this flameless lighter.

The lightweight and durable aircraft grade aluminum zinc-alloy casing is another advantage of the Inferno Electric Lighter. When out in the backcountry, you won’t have to worry about dropping or stepping on the lighter as this lighter can take the abuse and still deliver a reliable heat source.

Cons

  • As mentioned in the product description, items need to be placed directly in the electrical current to catch on fire. As the electrical nodes are located quite close together, only small items will fit. Before you bring this lighter with you on any camping trip it may be a good idea to first test if it can easily light your stove, candles and firestarter.

  • While the Inferno Lighter provides an impressive 500 charges, there are other flameless lighters on the market advertising a minimum of 1000 charges. If you are planning an extensive backcountry trip with no opportunities to charge the lighter you may want to consider an electric lighter which can deliver more than 500 charges. However, for most camping trips and all day trips, the charges provided by the Inferno Lighter is more than enough.

  • The cost of the Inferno Lighter is more expensive than traditional butane lighters and on the higher end of the electric lighter marker. If you are prone to losing lighters, you may want to consider another option.
